Straddling the Alabama and Florida state line, Flora-Bama Lounge, Package Store and Oyster Bar was recently voted one of the "Best Bars In The South" by Southern Living magazine, and named one of the Worlds "50 Best Beach Bars" by CNN Travel. Flora-Bama is the total beach lounge, it has everything an authentic seaside watering hole needs: live music, bikini contests, ice cold beer and bar drinks, plump juicy oysters on the half-shell and a huge fan base of loyal patrons and staff.
Now 50 years strong, Flora-Bama is truly legendary. It has hosted the annual Interstate Mullet Toss for over 26 years, where each April, thousands gather at the Flora-Bama's sandy beach to party and watch competitors (many after having a couple cold drinks) throw slippery fish called mullet like a discus across the state line. Southern Foodways Alliance has showcased recent attempts in a documentary by Joe York. Flora-Bama has survived fire, weathered countless storms and hurricanes, always rebuilding and pushing forward to the next millennium, with the next generation.
Since 1964 Flora-Bama roadhouse and package store has sprawled into a compound of sorts, where top musicians play live music, competitions like the polar bear plunge and chili cook-off are held seasonally, great casual fare is served with Gulf views, and church service is held on Sunday. Once the sun dips below the horizon, the focus turns to cutting loose on the dance floor and throwing back a cold one (or two) at the bar. All are treated equally and respected at Flora-Bama, and customers embrace this laid back style, as it is a place where bikers and boardroom executives can easily bump elbows with celebrities like Jimmy Buffett, Kid Rock, and the Manning brothers: Eli and Peyton.
The food served at Flora-Bama is classic beach dive fare. The menu is stacked with munchies like fried pickles and jumbo chicken wings to a fresh wild-caught shrimp basket with fries. Sandwiches, wraps and burgers are offered, but it is the briny bivalves that steal the show. Eaten raw with a squeeze of fresh lemon on the half-shell is still the most popular, but if wanting baked, try the Oysters Perdido served grilled with jalapenos, onions and Monterey jack cheese. The coveted deep water Panhandle Royal Reds are also on the menu, boiled quickly then ready to peel, dip in drawn butter and eat, they are the most unique and succulent crustaceans.
If seeking upscale culinary options with a little more family-friendly feel, just head across the street to Flora-Bama Yacht Club where Executive Chef Chris Sherrill awaits with staff on hand to prepare delicacies like the tempura fried lobster corn dogs, beignet fries with white chocolate ganache and a Duo Of Seared Tuna Sashimi made with yellowfin and white tuna (escolar), creole mustard wasabi, sriracha mayonnaise and hoisin sauce. Flora-Bama Yacht Club is less crowded and a delightful open-air restaurant where patrons can dine with toes in the sand, at the bar, or seated at a table with umbrella shade overlooking the waterfront lagoon.
